Global Landcare

Landcare has captured the imagination of millions of people worldwide. The landcare movement has achieved considerable success internationally, especially in Australia where there are 5,000+ landcare groups and 85% of citizens recognize the landcare logo. In the Philippines, there are now 500 landcare organizations. Landcare programs have recently developed in more than 15 other countries, with others still taking the first steps.  Throughout the world, it has been proven that bold leadership and public-private partnership, especially state, corporate, and urban sponsorship for landowners and their communities, are keys to the success of this movement.

A brief history...

Landcare first emerged in 1986 in Victoria, Australia as a state-initiated response to increasing problems with soil salination.  Five groups of neighboring farmers and ranchers were assembled to work with state and local agencies to determine and work towards locally relevant solutions to locally specific problems.  By 1990, the program had reached a national scale, with the Prime Minister declaring the 1990s the "Decade of Landcare".  Today, there are more than 4,000 local landcare groups active in Australia, with another 2,000 Coastcare groups focusing on coastal issues.
